In performing an enucleation, part of the veterinarian's responsibility should be to create as good a postsurgical appearance as possible. Cosmetics ARE important. Most enucleations performed on horses, dogs and cats are done using the transpalpebral technique. To be esthetically successful, this method requires the placement of some type of orbital implant. Otherwise, a marked indentation or dimpling will occur.
Duke Veterinary Supplies imports and distributes a line of silicone implants developed by Veterinary Ophthalmic Specialties Inc (VOS) in the U.S.A.
The small animal implants are all spheroidal and are available in 12 sizes. The choice between dark brown or black colour makes them suitable for either intraorbital implantation following an enucleation or intrascleral implantation following the evisceration of the globe.
A conforming equine model is available for intraorbital use only. Because of the unique configuration of the equine orbit, this implant is superior to simple round models. |
